Checkpointing Protocols in Distributed Systems with Mobile Hosts: A Performance Analysis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Checkpointing distributed applications involving mobile hosts is an important task to reduce the rollback during a recovery from a failure and to manage voluntary disconnections. In this paper we show the basic characteristics a checkpointing protocol needs to work with mobile hosts, namely, reduction of the number of checkpoints, the use of incremental checkpointing and consistent global checkpoint built on the y. Previous points must be implemented by using as small control information as possible and ensuring little rollback. A comparative analysis of the performance of some interesting communication-induced checkpointing protocols, adapted to a mobile setting, is presented. The analysis has been carried out by using discrete event simulation and several models have been considered for the hosts mobility.

Mobile computing systems are made up of different components among which Mobile Support Stations (MSSs) play a key role. This paper proposes an efficient MSS-based non-blocking coordinated checkpointing scheme for mobile computing environment. متن کاملAn Analysis of Checkpointing Algorithms for Distributed Mobile Systems
Distributed snapshots are an important building block for distributed systems, and are useful for constructing efficient checkpointing protocols, among other uses. Direct application of these algorithms to mobile systems is not feasible, however, due to differences in the environment in which mobile systems operate, relative to general distributed systems. The mobile computing environment intro...
متن کاملA novel min-process checkpointing scheme for mobile computing systems
In distributed computing systems, processes in different hosts take checkpoints to survive failures. For mobile computing systems, due to certain new characteristics such as mobility, low bandwidth, disconnection, low power consumption and limited memory, conventional distributed checkpointing schemes need to be reconsidered. In this paper, a novel min-process coordinated checkpointing algorith...
متن کاملMinimum Process Coordinated Checkpointing Scheme for Ad Hoc Networks
The wireless mobile ad hoc network (MANET) architecture is one consisting of a set of mobile hosts capable of communicating with each other without the assistance of base stations. This has made possible creating a mobile distributed computing environment and has also brought several new challenges in distributed protocol design. In this paper, we study a very fundamental problem, the fault tol...
متن کاملReal Time Snapshot Collection Algorithm for Mobile Distributed Systems with Minimum Number of Checkpoints
Checkpointing is an efficient way of implementing fault tolerance in distributed systems. Mobile computing raises many new issues, such as high mobility, lack of stable storage on mobile hosts (MHs), low bandwidth of wireless channels, limited battery life and disconnections that make the traditional checkpointing protocols unsuitable for such systems. Minimum process non-blocking coordinated c...
